Shreveport BJJ!: We are Archimedes Shreveport Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, come join our team! We provide a safe, healthy, and clean environment to learn one of the most effective martial arts in the world. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a grappling art that focuses on how to effectively and safely take opponents to the ground, pin them and submit them through joint locks, and chokes. Jiu-Jitsu is a great tool for self defense due to its emphasis on controlling your opponent.

In the summer between his Junior and Senior year our head Instructor, Professor Christopher Velez walked into the halls of Prime BJJ where he met his Professor Carlos Santos who he would train under for 11 years. Professor Santos is one of only a few in the world that holds 3 adult world IBJJF championship titles. Carlos is the founder of First BJJ, HQ’d in Salt Lake City, UT and is one of the old school members of the original Carlson Gracie Team.

But Archimedes is about more than just your physical development. Students will develop resilience by going through the difficulties of the art as we incorporate sparring in our practice. Socially, Jiu-Jitsu is also a great place to develop friendships and camaraderie by training together. All of these benefits lead to a more healthy and confident lifestyle.

What makes Archimedes Jiu-Jitsu unique is our well thought out and planned curriculum. Teaching Jiujitsu in it’s 3 facets: The sport (Gi and No-Gi competition) MMA application, as well as street (focused on practical self defense).

Our Instructor: Christopher Velez

Professor Christopher Velez is a dedicated instructor of Shreveport Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Chris’ journey started in the wrestling room at the US Air Force Academy Preparatory School in 2009. Following his graduation from prep school he attended the US Air Force Academy where he walked onto the D1 wrestling team. While wrestling at USAFA he also trained Judo for 2 years in his sophomore and junior years.

After graduating Chris moved to Minot, ND in 2014 where there was not an organized Brazilian Jiujitsu program. Within a couple of weeks Chris had started a BJJ program as a blue belt where he found a passion for coaching. His coaching led to bringing his team to various tournaments where they collected wins and medals. In 2017 then moved to Great Falls Mt where he replicated his program instructing as a purple belt.

Building a team that had collected medals from tournaments in Montana, Idaho, and Utah. In 2021 Chris moved to Lehi, Ut where he returned to First BJJ Carlson Gracie HQ. He received his brown belt that year and ran classes teaching adults in the fundamental classes, gi and no gi classes. He also taught kids classes and was a fixture of the First BJJ Coaching Staff. Chris is currently a black belt.

Christopher has competed in various tournaments across the nation. Medaling in Denver, Los Angeles, San Diego, Chicago, Helena, Boseman, Missoula, Pocatello, Cedar City, and Salt Lake City. He has also won tournaments in Salt Lake City, UT and Fargo, ND

Archimedes Jiu-Jitsu offers a range of services to help individuals develop their combative skills, mental and physical resilience, and overall fitness. The services offered include Gi, No-Gi, Self Defense, and Combatives for Military, Law Enforcement, and Concealed Carry. Private one-on-one classes are also available for those who prefer personalized training.
